Which Brands Does AI Recommend for Holiday Gifts in 2026?

Which Brands Do ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Recommend for Holiday Gifts? What the 2026 Research Shows

By Shraddhanvita Tiwari, Content Strategist and SEO Lead | Reviewed by Ravi Adatrao, Marketing Strategist and President | Last updated: October 20, 2026

Key Takeaways

  • AI engines mostly agree on where to shop but not on what to give. In BrandRank's October 2026 holiday study, four or more of six engines named the same retailer on 65% of store questions, but the same product on only 31% of gift questions.
  • ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude all picked the same brand for several gift categories, including LEGO for kids aged 5 to 10, Furbo for pet lovers, Aura frames for grandparents, Theragun Mini for fitness fans and Harry & David pears for gourmet gifts.
  • Amazon, Target and Nordstrom earned the most first-place retailer recommendations, and service proof such as delivery promises and return policies drove many of those wins.
  • Most brands never make the shortlist. A CommerceV3 analysis of more than 1 million US shopping prompts found brands were absent from 76% of category prompts on ChatGPT and 81% on Gemini.
  • Our own check of Google AI Overviews for 9 holiday gift searches found more than 60 brands and retailers named, with Reddit threads and editorial gift guides doing most of the sourcing. Brand websites were rarely the cited source.
  • Smaller brands like Quince, Bellroy and Aura are winning because each one owns a clear, repeatable reason to buy, not because they outspend the giants.

Holiday shoppers are not just typing "gifts for dad" into Google anymore. They are asking AI assistants for help, often with very specific requests that include a budget, an interest and a delivery deadline. And the assistant usually answers with a short list, not a page of options.

That shortlist is becoming valuable real estate. Adobe forecasts that AI-referred traffic to US retail sites will grow 130% year over year this holiday season, and found that AI-referred shoppers generated 43% more revenue per visit than shoppers from other channels in August 2026, according to its 2026 Holiday Shopping Forecast. A 2026 survey by Optimove found that 72% of US consumers regularly or occasionally use tools like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for shopping ideas and gift recommendations.

So which brands are those assistants actually recommending? We reviewed the latest US research on AI shopping recommendations published between March and October 2026, focused on what it reveals about ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, ran our own check of Google AI Overviews for nine real holiday gift searches, and added examples from our AI visibility tool, GeoPulse. Here is what the data shows and what it means for brands before Black Friday.

The Research Behind This Article

This article brings together several independent studies so you can see the full picture in one place. Each one uses its own methodology, so we note the source with every figure.

  • BrandRank 2026 Holiday AI Recommendation Share Index (October 2026): ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Meta AI were asked 170 holiday shopping questions, producing 950 scored answers. This is the main source for the gift and retailer findings below.
  • CommerceV3 (reported October 2026): More than 1 million US shopping prompts run across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity between March and July 2026, each run five times per engine.
  • Profound (March 2026): An analysis of 22.5 million ChatGPT shopping offers to see which retailers receive buy links.
  • Lean Summits Google AI Overviews check (October 2026): We searched nine common holiday gift questions on Google from the US and recorded every brand, product, retailer and source shown in each AI Overview.
  • Adobe and Optimove (2026): Holiday traffic forecasts and consumer survey data on AI shopping behavior.

All of these studies are snapshots. AI answers change often, so treat the findings as a guide to how engines behave this season, not as permanent rankings or product tests.

Finding 1: AI Agrees on Where to Shop, Not What to Give

The clearest pattern in BrandRank's holiday index is the gap between store questions and gift questions. When shoppers asked where to buy, four or more engines named the same retailer 65% of the time. When they asked what to buy, that agreement fell to 31%. Only one product question produced a unanimous answer across all six engines: the Amazon Fire HD Kids tablet.

The hardest people to shop for were also where AI was least consistent. Gifts for mothers, fathers and coworkers, gifts under $25 and luxury gifts over $250 each produced six different answers from six engines. For brands, that is good news. The gift shelf is still wide open, and the brands that give AI a clear reason to recommend them have a real chance to win it.

Finding 2: The Gifts ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude Recommend

Here is how the three engines most shoppers use answered some of the most common holiday gift questions in BrandRank's study. The full set of answers, including Grok, Perplexity and Meta AI, is available in the original index.

Where the three engines agree

All three named the same brand for kids' building toys (LEGO), pet cameras (Furbo), digital frames for grandparents (Aura), massage guns for fitness fans (Theragun), coffee machines (Nespresso) and gourmet food gifts (Harry & David). These brands share one thing: each is closely tied to a specific gifting moment. A shopper describes a person or a problem, and one brand is the obvious answer.

Where they split

Categories with several strong, well-reviewed brands produced different answers. Earbuds split between Bose and Apple. Smartwatches split between Apple and Garmin, and fragrance split between Jo Malone and Chanel. In these categories, a brand can win on one engine and be missing on another, which is why measuring each engine separately matters.

Finding 3: Amazon, Target and Nordstrom Lead, and Service Decides

Across all 950 answers in the BrandRank study, Amazon earned 125 first-place recommendations, Target 78 and Nordstrom 72. But the three engines did not see the retail market the same way.

Target14178
Nordstrom14511
Walmart707
Costco456

Gemini leaned hardest toward Amazon and did not name Walmart first a single time. ChatGPT spread its picks more evenly across Amazon, Target and Nordstrom. Claude favored Amazon, then Nordstrom.

Service was the deciding factor. On 29 questions about delivery, checkout, returns and getting help, Amazon, Nordstrom, Target and Costco took 80% of all answers, compared with about 32% across the whole study. Amazon won questions about getting the gift there on time, while Nordstrom won questions about returns and resolving problems. The engines rewarded service they could read about, such as published return windows and dated delivery promises.

Buy links tell a similar story. In Profound's analysis of ChatGPT shopping results, Walmart led first-position buy links while Target had the broadest overall presence. That matters because ChatGPT's shopping experience has expanded quickly: an Evertune study tracking the same shopping prompts found the in-chat shopping widget appeared in 8.3% of responses in October 2025 and 87% by February 2026.

Finding 4: Most Brands Never Make the Shortlist

An AI assistant typically recommends only a few options, and every other brand gets nothing: no impression and no click. The scale of that problem is large. In a CommerceV3 analysis of more than 1 million US shopping prompts, brands were absent from 76% of category prompts on ChatGPT, 81% on Gemini and 74% on Perplexity. A small group of category leaders, marketplaces and editorially validated brands captured most of the recommendations.

Yet BrandRank's study shows the shortlist is not reserved for the biggest advertisers. Quince won all six engines for affordable cashmere, and Bellroy won all six for men's wallets. Aura and Furbo each won five of six in their categories. None of them is a household name on the scale of Apple or Amazon. What they have is one clear, repeatable reason to buy, such as real cashmere at a lower price, or a wallet that is slim and well organized, that the engines describe in almost the same words.

Finding 5: AI Engines Are Often Out of Date

BrandRank flagged 33 answers for outdated products, wrong prices or recommendations that did not fit the question. Several engines recommended older product generations, such as Apple Watch Series 9 when Series 11 is available, or an older JBL speaker model. Four engines also referred to Amazon's shopping assistant as Rufus, a name Amazon retired in May 2026.

For brands, this is a practical risk. If AI engines describe last year's model, last year's price or an old product name, shoppers may be sent to the wrong product or a competitor. Keeping product information current and consistent across your site, product feeds and third-party listings helps engines describe you accurately.

Our Test: What Google AI Overviews Recommends for 9 Holiday Gift Searches

Many shoppers still start on Google, where AI Overviews now answer gift questions before the regular results. To see how Google's AI compares with the chat assistants, we searched nine common holiday gift questions from the US in October 2026 and recorded every brand, product, retailer and source each AI Overview showed.

Reddit and gift guides do the heavy lifting

Reddit threads were cited in five of the nine AI Overviews, and editorial gift guides such as Wirecutter, The Strategist, Who What Wear, PCMag and WIRED sourced most of the rest. Brand websites were rarely the cited source. The exceptions were retailers and brands that publish their own gift guides, such as Target, Best Buy, Amazon and Fat Brain Toys. Uncommon Goods stood out, appearing in three of the nine answers largely because of its detailed gift-guide pages.

Google often agrees with the chat assistants

Several brands that ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude picked in BrandRank's study also showed up in Google's answers: LEGO for young kids, Le Creuset and the Thermapen ONE for cooks, and Harry & David for gourmet and corporate gifts. Brands with a clear gifting role tend to win across both chat and search.

Google is fresher on products, but not always on sources

Because AI Overviews draw on live search results, they named newer product generations, such as Apple Watch Series 12 and Google Pixel Watch 5, than the chat engines did in BrandRank's study. But fresh products do not always mean fresh sources. Three of the nine answers cited a source published in 2024 or earlier, including a 2023 Reddit thread for the eco-friendly gifts search.

Prices are not always consistent

The tech gifts answer listed the Garmin fēnix 8 at $999.99 in its summary but showed $609.99 on the product card in the same answer, and the Nintendo Switch 2 at $499.99 in the text but $569.99 on the card. Six of the nine answers included prices, so shoppers are seeing numbers that may not match what they pay at checkout.

The "hard to shop for" searches are wide open

Two of the nine answers, for a mom who has everything and for eco-friendly gifts, mostly named categories rather than brands. That matches BrandRank's finding that gifts for mothers produced six different answers from six chat engines. When AI cannot point to an obvious brand, the first brand to clearly own that need has a real opening.

B2B gifting runs on niche sources

The corporate gifts answer was built almost entirely on Reddit and small gifting companies' blogs, including a Teak & Twine post from 2024. For B2B gifting brands, that is an opportunity: a well-structured, current corporate gift guide could compete for these answers with relatively little competition.

What This Looks Like for a Single Brand

Category averages hide how different each engine can be. Headphones are a good example. In BrandRank's study, ChatGPT's first pick for wireless earbuds was Bose, while Gemini and Claude chose Apple AirPods Pro. Sony, one of the best-known names in audio, was not the first choice of any of those three engines for earbuds.

GeoPulse makes this visible for any brand. The screenshot below shows a keyword-by-engine visibility matrix for headphone gift queries for sony.com, tracked against Apple, Bose, Beats and Sennheiser. Each row is a query, and each column shows whether the brand is cited or absent in ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

A view like this shows exactly which queries and which engines to prioritize, instead of relying on an overall average that can hide gaps on the engine your customers actually use.

What Brands Should Do Before Black Friday

Black Friday falls on November 27, 2026, and Cyber Monday on November 30. There is still time to improve how AI engines see your brand before the peak, but not much. Based on the research above, these are the actions most likely to make a difference.

1. Own one clear reason to buy

The brands that won across engines are described by the moment they solve: photos for grandparents, checking on the dog, a slim wallet. Make that reason explicit and consistent on your product pages, in your descriptions and in your press and partner content, using the language shoppers actually use.

2. Publish your service promises as facts

Holiday return windows, gift-receipt terms, shipping cutoffs and pickup options should be easy to find, clearly dated and simple to quote. The research shows engines reward service they can read about.

3. Keep product data current

Make sure the newest models, current prices and accurate stock information appear on your site, in your product feeds and with your retail partners. Our technical SEO and AI search audit covers the structured data and crawlability basics that help here.

4. Earn third-party proof

Editorially validated brands dominate AI recommendations. Pitch gift-guide editors and review sites now, and encourage fresh customer reviews ahead of the rush. Our guide on AI search source quality explains which sources carry the most weight.

5. Measure each engine separately

Gemini, ChatGPT and Claude see the market differently. Track your visibility on each engine, not just an average, and re-check weekly through the season. For a deeper playbook, read How to Get AI Search Engines to Cite Your Brand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brands does AI recommend most for holiday gifts in 2026?

In BrandRank's October 2026 study, LEGO, Furbo, Aura, Theragun, Nespresso and Harry & David were picked by ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude alike for their gift categories. Among retailers, Amazon received the most first-place recommendations, followed by Target and Nordstrom.

Does Google AI Overviews recommend different gift brands than ChatGPT?

Partly. In our October 2026 check of nine gift searches, Google's AI Overviews named several of the same brands the chat engines favor, such as LEGO, Le Creuset and Harry & David, but relied heavily on Reddit threads and editorial gift guides as sources. Because it uses live search results, it also tended to name newer product models.

Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude recommend the same brands?

Often, but not always. They tend to agree on retailers and on gifts tied to a clear use case, but they split in crowded categories like earbuds, smartwatches and fragrance. Gemini, for example, leaned more heavily toward Amazon than the other engines did.

How do AI engines decide which brands to recommend?

None of these engines publish an exact formula. The research points to a few consistent factors: a clear reason to buy, trusted third-party coverage, strong reviews, accurate product information and published service promises like delivery and return terms.

Can a brand pay to appear in AI gift recommendations?

Organic recommendations in AI assistants are generally earned through visibility, reputation and content, not bought directly. Advertising options in AI products vary by platform and change often, so check each platform's current policies.

How can I see whether AI engines recommend my brand?

You can test prompts manually, but results vary between sessions and engines. GeoPulse tracks your brand across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, shows your citation share and highlights which competitors are recommended instead.
